CHAPTER NINE
We dropped Vincent back off at the cottage and scurried off the island in record-breaking time. Luke and Jamie’s arrival wasn’t the only reason we were in a hurry. It was after six and Alice Hatter was waiting for us at her restaurant, the Waterfall, and Alice did not like to be kept waiting.
The moment we stepped off on the dock, Hayden and I separated. After several unsuccessful attempts at reaching any of my co-workers, Hayden decided to cover the deaths at Jerry Fenton’s office himself. So, as soon as he secured the boat, he made a beeline to the lawyer’s office and I hurried to the grotto for my appointment with Alice. With any luck, Hayden would be able to join us before dinner was over.
I hadn’t been to the grotto yet, but was rather excited to try it. The Waterfall had been packed since it opened and I had heard only good things about it. In fact, it was on my to do list to visit at some point in the next few weeks. However, with Madison Hatter’s death, it jumped up the list to first place. I figured that I could kill two birds with one stone. Get information on Madison Hatter for my story and check out the restaurant for my food column. Win-win for me.
I stopped on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant and took a look around. If the food tasted as good as the restaurant looked, I was to be in for a treat. On one side of the restaurant were spectacular views of the ocean, and on the other side, was a beautiful waterfall that cascaded into a crystal blue pool. The pool stretched around the outdoor restaurant. Diners came and went by two bridges. Over the waterfall was another bridge, which led to a glass indoor restaurant for those who didn’t want to eat and bake out in the hot Florida sun. Underneath the indoor restaurant and just behind the waterfall was the grotto, a manmade enclave resembling a cave.
I checked out the menu posted on a column next to the bridge. Mostly standard fare: seafood, steak, pasta, pizza, and sandwiches. Basically what you would expect for a restaurant whose main aim is to please the influx of tourists that had been inundating our little town for the last year. The prices were a bit outrageous, but considering the place appeared to be packed, I must have been one of the few who thought so. Despite the hefty price tag for one of the Waterfall’s dinners, the atmosphere was decidedly casual, at least in the outdoor section of the restaurant.
Bikinis, flip-flops and swim trunks, were the outfit of choice for the Waterfall’s customers. After all, what else would you wear to a restaurant surrounded by a pool? Once a diner was finished dining, they could go swimming in the pool or the ocean and work off all those calories they just ate. Once they were tired of swimming, they could go eat again.
